The Story

Child’s Play is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2003 by Penny Arcade authors Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins.  After Bill France’s article, “Violent video game teach children to kill” was released, Penny Arcade founded the organization.  They used it as a way to challenge their readers to oppose negative views of the video game community, by creating positive change in the world.  Child’s Play works with over seventy hospitals worldwide and creates gift wish lists for video games, toys, and books. There are hundred of children worldwide whose physical health force them to remain in hospitals for extended periods of time.  Having books and toys can distract them from the fear they have from their own situations.

At Drew University, I have been involved with and am currently the president of the Drew Organization of Gaming for four years.  Being involved with the club, and hearing stories from past members, the club has gained a bad reputation for being a passive organization that does nothing but play video games.  I have heard everything from “they are just nerds who do nothing all day and can’t socialize” to “they are just a waste of space on campus.”  As much as this is hurtful, this is also a stigma that carries throughout the world when discussing the video game community.  However, there is a slowly building number of charities where gaming companies and gaming streamers are raising millions of dollars for different causes around the world.

My project is to raise money for Child’s Play in order to purchase toys on the wish list for the Children’s Special Hospital of Newark.  We would hold a gaming tournament on the campus, which would invite organizations on campus and other colleges in the area to come participate in different games.  I would also fundraise before and during the event through a live stream service called Twitch.  If this project is successful, I want the Drew community to be able to look upon the Gaming Club with pride.  Just like a sports team, or the concert hall, I want our organization to be synonymous with something that creates good for our campus.  Not only that, but I want to continue the mission of Penny Arcade. To eliminate depression in children’s hospitals by providing them with the opportunity to be creative through video games while also eliminating fear and depression.
